I’ve been noticing a lot how animals blend right in to their environments.
This isn’t anything new and obviously an adaptation over time, the entire basis of evolution and genetic mutation, but in art sometimes I see animals portrayed as designs or decor for interiors.
When I observe an animal long enough to make a painting, I notice more how the edges disappear and the colors and patterns are the same. This is true for many birds.
For the deer, the antlers look like branches and I tried to emphasize that. Before making this painting I was thinking how the antlers are to look attractive to mates and for battles, but as the deer is a prey animal, they are also used to blend in and survive.
A big part of my art practice is observation, which is a kind of listening, another skill that I do practice in my relationships. Until I make a painting there are many things I never notice, never would notice, until I observe and listen, then a different world emerges.
